The summer season is officially here and that means that many friends and family are enjoying time together out in the sunshine.

Hitting the road for a trip to your favorite campground or out-of-town destination is at the top of the list for fun summertime activities. And, enjoying time with friends and family is a great way to spend these next few months.

Also, having friends and family come to your home is a favorite way to enjoy time together. Hosting backyard cookouts and having guests stay for extended visits are fun ways to enjoy quality time during the summer vacation time.

And, with all of this extra activity, it is important to make sure that your plumbing system is up to the task. The extra volume of use should be no problem if your system is properly maintained. Not to mention the extra water usage that having more people in the home will cause.

Make sure to follow these tips for keeping your summertime visits fun, without having a major impact on your plumbing system or your budget:

  • If you don’t have them installed already, consider adding drain screens to each of the fixtures in your home. These are easily found at your local hardware store and are fairly inexpensive. They are designed to capture large particles before they are rinsed down the drain. This is especially helpful in the bathroom where a high volume of hair can get rinsed down the drain and cause major clogs
  • Think about purchasing and installing low-flow plumbing fixtures before your guests arrive. These plumbing accessories are a large investment at the outset but, the savings of water and money over one year will have them paying for themselves. After that, it’s all profit for you.
  • Make sure that your water heater has been serviced recently. With the extra use of the dishwasher and the bathroom fixtures it is important to ensure that your water heater is up to the task. Check the thermostat and confirm that it is set to no higher than 120 degrees to make sure that everyone is kept safe.

Enjoy your summertime visits by taking these simple steps to keep your plumbing system and your home in great condition to host. Having a plumbing disaster during a visit from out of town guests will quickly put a damper on your fun in the sun plans.
