The Benefits of Flo Smart Water Shutoff

In Santa Cruz, the Flo by Moen valve isn’t just a gadget—it’s a practical ally against water woes, tailored to the town’s coastal charm and eco-minded spirit. Here are some of the reasons why installing Flo by Moen is a smart investment.

Protection Against Water Damage in a Coastal Climate

Santa Cruz County’s coastal climate can accelerate pipe corrosion and increase the risk of leaks or bursts. The Flo by Moen Smart Water Shutoff features FloSense technology, which continuously monitors water flow and detects even the smallest abnormalities—down to a drip per minute. If a potential leak is detected, it can automatically shut off your water supply, preventing expensive repairs and water damage.

If you live in high-risk areas like Capitola, Aptos, or Soquel, this proactive protection is an essential safeguard for your home.

Peace of Mind for a Unique Lifestyle

From historic bungalows to cliffside retreats, Santa Cruz homes deserve reliable protection. The Flo valve integrates with Alexa and Google Home, and the optional FloProtect plan offers added warranty and deductible coverage. For residents balancing surf culture with homeownership, it’s a low-maintenance way to ensure their properties stay safe.

Remote Monitoring for a Vacation-Friendly Town

Santa Cruz is a popular vacation destination, and many homeowners own second properties or seasonal rentals. With the Flo by Moen, you can monitor and control your water system from anywhere using your smartphone. If unusual activity—like a pressure drop or excessive flow—is detected, you’ll receive instant alerts via text, email, or app notifications.

For homeowners with properties in Scotts Valley, Felton, or the Santa Cruz Mountains, this feature provides peace of mind when you’re away.

Cost Savings Amid Rising Water Rates

With Santa Cruz County’s high water rates and conservation mandates, smart water management is more important than ever. The Flo by Moen system provides real-time water usage insights via the Moen Smart Water App, helping you:

  • Identify water waste from leaks, running toilets, or inefficient irrigation.
  • Reduce water waste by up to 90%.
  • Lower your monthly water bills.
  • Stay compliant with local conservation guidelines.

Supporting Santa Cruz’s Eco-Conscious Community

As a community that values sustainability, Santa Cruz homeowners will appreciate that the Flo by Moen Smart Water Shutoff promotes responsible water use. Its daily microleak tests and conservation goals help minimize waste and reduce strain on local water sources like Loch Lomond Reservoir.

Excellent

So happy we did this rebuild/upgrade. Our original radiant heat system was 18 years old, not well installed in the first place and showing signs of imminent failure. So we did our due diligence, had three conversations with three companies and Duncan Plumbing was by far the best choice. Duncan Plumbing sent their technician, Jedidiah (Jed), and we got started with the preliminaries. Jed took plenty of time to assess, calculate and determine the best long-term solutions.
Here's what we ended up with:
Plan A - high end proposal
Plab B - medium end proposal
Plan C - lower end option
We chose the high end proposal as it made the most sense given the overall condition of many of the existing components.
Pros and cons:
Pros -
Always on time and in communication
Three proposals on the spot that day
Jed made the proposal and did the job
Stayed exactly on proposed cost
Stayed exactly on schedule (done early)
Perfection in craftsmanship
Pride in job
Clean up everything during/after job
Streamlined/more efficient results
Answered all questions at any time
Expert knowledge (hard to find)
Courteous and professional
Cons -
Really ... none
At the end of the day (or job) could not be happier! Strongly recommend!!
Wish I could share a before picture but don't have. Look at the after picture and judge for yourself.
Honest and quick to come up with plans that addressed our problems quickly and efficiently!
JC with Duncan was great. He communicated consistently, trouble-shot the problem, and offered us different options and pricing to solve the problem. Would definitely recommend and am planning to use again if we have future issues.
Duncan's crews are always professional and conduct excellent work in a timely manner and they are very respectful, even when dealing with our high maintenance dogs.
We have a house with 60+ year old plumbing. Over the 40+ years of our residence in the home, we've contacted Duncan Plumbing whenever there's been an issue, and Duncan has always sent capable crews out quickly to assess and deal with our various clogged drains. They have almost always recommended, at the end of their visits, that we consider a whole-house upgrade of the pipes and drains.

This April, when horrible black guck started bubbling up out of our bathtub drain, Nick, Frank, and Zack from Duncan responded quickly. They immediately and correctly ascertained that a plant root in the front yard was clogging the main sewage drain to the street. They used their camera snake to target and show us photos of the problem, then sent in their rotor machine to break down the root, which fixed the bathtub drain problem. Finally, they again strongly urged us to upgrade water and drain pipes. Duncan sent us an estimate. It was painfully expensive, but we finally agreed to go through with the project. It took about a week and required that the crew traipse through our bedroom to access the under house crawl space, but I can't imagine a more sensitive, considerate, knowledgeable, and professional team than Nick, Frank, and Zack.

When we saw the condition of the old drains and pipes they were removing, we were grateful we were getting new plumbing – apparently just in time!

Duncan Plumbing's office staff was also terrific to work with. We highly recommend Duncan plumbing.
Jed Kraft was professional, friendly and courteous. Effective with his work, humoured my questions and offered several insightful comments on things to watch out for in the future given our extensive home renovations. Highly recommend this plumber!
Regarding our Rinnai tankless water heater: on May 14, 2025, Frank and Matt fixed an error code (#63) and did an annual check-up. We are very satisfied with their work and how they communicated with my wife and me.
Duncan Plumbing office staff responded to my voicemail message quickly to get my failing water heater evaluated by their professional, Romero. Romero provided options for its replacement and was available to do so immediately, but I had questions regarding the best financial option for me, a recent widow. The office staff offered me an opportunity to speak with the owner, Scott Duncan. He educated me on water heaters, provided his professional advice, and backed up his recommendations by honoring a Yellow Page Voucher from 2012, and giving me a Widow Discount! Romero was scheduled to return to do the job at their first available time. Romero came back with Zach to help him with moving hot water tanks, and used his help to move other stuff around. They worked carefully and methodically together being careful not to damage the washer, dryer or freezer in the immediate vicinity. They followed my request and drilled the two new pipe holes that were required where I wanted them in a less visible area. I am very pleased with Romero’s expertise and excellent work in replacing an old water heater with a new one. It required a lot of extra work in installing it so it meets the code requirements!
Thank you Duncan Plumbing!
